NTI welcomes applicants undertaking a gap-year (between secondary school and university), undergraduate students, post-graduates, and professionals looking for a broad-based theatrical training intensive. We look for a proven ability to handle the demands of disciplined theater work and to be a positive and contributing member of an ensemble in an intensive semester of study at the O’Neill.

When Should I Apply?

Summer and Fall Semesters (Theatermakers, NTI, NTI-AD, NMTI, MATS) - before March 20

Spring Semesters (NTI, NTI-AD, NTI-AP) - before October 20

Early applications are encouraged! Students who submit their materials prior to March 1st for Summer/Fall semesters or October 1st for Spring semesters are eligible to receive priority interview slots and early admission.

What Do I Need to Apply?

  • Two letters of evaluation, or the email addresses for your two evaluators

  • Three short answer questions to get to know you

  • $35 application fee

After reviewing your initial application, the admissions team may ask qualified candidates to provide the following additional materials:

  • 500-word essay explaining why you would like to attend NTI. Consider the following questions in your response: What draws you to pursue a life in the theater? How does this program fit into your future goals as an artist? Discuss an inspirational theater teacher, project, or experience.

  • Transcript (a PDF of an unofficial transcript accepted)

  • Supplemental Artistic Materials. Please upload video or audio files demonstrating your abilities in two (2) of the following forms: acting, directing, design, movement, writing, singing. Original material is welcomed! Each upload should not exceed five (5) minutes in length.

  • Financial Aid Application You are given the option to apply for need-based financial aid through the National Theater Institute.


These materials must be completed by November 1 for a spring semester or April 1 for a summer or fall program,or your application will expire. However, the sooner we receive your entire application, the sooner you will be notified of your admissions status. Finalists for each program will be notified to schedule an interview, which will take place over phone or skype.

  • Supplemental Artistic Materials. Please submit samples showcasing the quality of your work in your chosen track. 

Directing: A portfolio of your directing work thus far, i.e. production or rehearsal photos, sample notebook, or annotated script, or short clips of your work. We are not looking for quantity, just to learn more about your directorial voice, style, and technique.

Playwriting: Send us two or three of your scripts that best showcase your voice, work, style, and technique. These could be one-act plays or full-length plays. Please do not submit film or television scripts.

Acting: Please submit a video audition showcasing two (2) contrasting monologues. For your interview, keep these monologues fresh in your mind because you will be asked to present them again (likely with a few adjustments).
